Furniture Planning Basics

Programming, Space Planning and Delivery/Installation.

systems furniture, used office furnitureWhile all of our Project Managers have degrees in Interior Design, their focus is developing and optimizing your office furniture layout and ensuring timely furniture delivery and installation. Our PM's will refine existing furniture plans or develop new ones, and fine tune ergonomics, workflow and cost.

As part of the initial planning or programming phase of a project, all of the employee input for furniture requirements should be gathered. Each work group should be evaluated for these and other furniture requirements:

  1. closed office vs. systems furniture
  2. overall square foot requirements
  3. storage requirements
  4. computers and equipment
  5. task surfaces and lighting
  6. base electrical requirements
  7. seating

Re-form Project Managers will take your programming data and a floor plan of your proposed space, and work with you to develop a furniture plan. This plan will be used for a quotation, and if approved will also serve as an installation drawing. Some considerations included in the furniture plan are:

  1. programming requirements for workgroups
  2. company image and finishes
  3. future expansion
  4. work flow
  5. building codes, life safety issues, and ADA requirements

Once a drawing is approved and an order placed, we will begin work on your furniture. Approximate lead times for different types of work are shown below. Project Managers will track your order through each step of our production process, follow up on delivery details and installation, then walk through the completed job with you.

It's hard to overemphasize the importance of planning ahead. Depending on the size and complexity of your project, you may wish to consider hiring an Interior Designer to develop and implement interior construction and finish specifications. It is not unreasonable to expect an experienced Interior Designer to actually achieve net savings on a project by cutting out costly mistakes and unnecessary expenses. A good description of the role of an interior designer is found on the IIDA website.

Furniture Options

Re-form offers several ways to implement your proposed furniture requirements. Here is a brief description of each.

  1. Refurbish Existing Furniture - The most inexpensive option if you have what you need but it needs updating.
  2. As-Is Furniture - Re-form purchases large lots of grade A, commercial, used office furniture in excellent condition and current finishes. We buy it, catalog it, and resell it "As-Is" for a fraction of list price.
  3. Remanufactured Furniture - We also purchase warehouse lots of grade A systems furniture, files and seating in misc. finishes and remanufacture the product to your specification. This is a great way to get high quality furniture in custom finishes at great savings from new.
  4. Quick Ship Furniture - Quick ship (RFQS) furniture is Herman Miller Action Office systems furniture purchased as remanufacturing stock, but is remanufactured in our standard RFQS finish.
  5. New Furniture - There is always something you just can't find in our inventory or yours. We represent dozens of quality manufacturers for those specialty items.

Refurbish your existing furniture or replace it

One of the advantages of working with Re-form is being afforded the choice of whether to refurbish your existing furniture, replace it, or do a little of both. If your furniture is not serving its purpose, the clear choice is to replace it. If you want to reuse it, evaluate it for the following criteria:

  1. Does it meet current ergonomic and safety specs?
  2. Are replacement parts still available?
  3. Can you afford to have it out of service during refurbishing and moving?
  4. Do the savings justify direct and indirect costs?

If refurbishing seems viable, review our services and ask a Project Manager for pricing. If you have already invested in quality commercial furniture, refurbishing it is very economical and can extend the life of your investment indefinitely.

Lead Times

Depending on our production schedules, material availability and the type of furniture services you require, your lead times could be days or weeks. Please allow for lead times.
